New UK Fuel Rule Targets Faster Price Transparency at Petrol Pumps
Drivers across the UK should find it easier to compare petrol and diesel prices after new rules required petrol stations to quickly report fuel price changes.
Starting from February 2nd, 2026, petrol stations are now legally required to report price changes to central fuel price database within 30 minutes. This new system is designed to enhance price transparency and help drivers find more affordable fuel prices in their area.
The new regulations will apply to most retail petrol stations in the UK, including major fuel retailers, independent and supermarket petrol stations. Certain non-retail transactions, including commercial or business-to-business fuel sales, fuel sold in containers, and some specialist depot operations, will be exempt.
How the new UK fuel price reporting system works
The new regulations establishes a national fuel price reporting system, often referred to as the Fuel Finder Scheme. It is designed to ensure data is collected centrally and disseminated quickly to third-party applications and onto consumers.
Here’s how the system works:
- Petrol stations must first register all their forecourts in the scheme.
- When a price changes, the station must report it within 30 minutes.
- Updates are to be submitted to a central database.
- The price data is then distributed to approved third-party services.
These third-party services include:
- Fuel price comparison websites.
- Fuel price checking apps.
- Sat nav and navigation systems.
- Journey-planning tools.
This means drivers should start seeing more accurate and frequently updated fuel prices when searching for their cheapest fuel station.
What the new rules mean for drivers in the UK.
The biggest change for motorists is that they will now have greater visibility of petrol and diesel prices across the country at anytime.
With more real-time data available, drivers will now be able to:
- Compare petrol prices nearby more easily.
- Choose a cheaper station before filling up.
- Avoid overpaying for fuel.
The industry suggests that improved fuel price transparency can help drivers save money by choosing more affordable petrol stations in their area. The Competition and Markets Authority has suggested that easier access to live fuel prices could help drivers save up to £4.50 per tank by comparing nearby stations, enabling motorists to shop around more effectively. (GOV.UK)
Motoring groups also say that drivers who regularly compare prices can often find fuel around 5p–6p per litre cheaper than the local average, depending on where they fill up. (RAC)
Over time, regulators expect the increased visibility of petrol prices to boost competition between fuel retailers, encouraging stations to compete more actively for drivers’ business and helping keep prices lower. (IBTimes UK)
So who is enforcing the new fuel price rules?
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is responsible for overseeing the new fuel price reporting rules under The Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025
The CMA's Fuel Finder Enforcement Guidance has allowed for a 3-month transition period.
During this grace period, the CMA will focus on helping petrol stations comply rather than issuing penalties:
From February to early May 2026, the priority will be to support businesses in adhering to the new reporting requirements.
The Regulators will work with petrol retailers to fix technical or reporting issues before escalating enforcement action.
This effectively gives the industry around three months to fully adapt to the new system. Forecourt price reporting obligations
However, the regulations also give authorities stronger enforcement powers, meaning tougher action could follow if stations fail to report prices once the system is fully established.
